This is a view from in front of our cottage in Mackinaw City. All the years of looking out at the water has helped to inspire us to
to explore more of our country's waterways.

Campbellford to Peterborough

Thursday morning we took our time leaving Campbellford so we could do one more bakery run.  Another pair of boats left first and we left second with Karma.  We traveled to Hastings and stayed at the Lock 18 wall overnight.  Our plans were to stay at the Hasting Marina but with the wind and current the spot they had for us was more difficult to get into than we wanted  The lock wall proved to be fine once we started the generator for the air conditioners.  Once again it was very warm and after having done six locks we were pretty tired. I went up to the Laundromat and did two loads of laundry.  That was also very HOT, no air conditioning.  Ivy and Bob stopped by and we had a nice chat with them before they went off to dinner and we grilled our on board. It cools off quiet nicely once the sun goes down so we were able to turn the generator off and open the windows and hatches for the night.

Canada is a beautiful country

As planned Karma and Passport left at 6:15 Friday morning and it was a great day to travel. Slightly over cast and the water like glass. The Canadian country side is just beautiful and one cannot help but notice all of the Canadian flags flying as we pass along the waterways.  It is no wonder that they are  proud of there country.

We only had one lock and about 30+ miles to do today. We arrived in Peterborough around 1:00.  The only lock for the day was just before the town.  We had had to wait while a few boats locked thru before it was our turn, when it was time they squeezed in our 35 foot plus boat, Karma who is 43 feet a sail boat with its mast down that was probably 40 or more feet all together and three pontoon boats into the lock.  It was quiet interesting to say the least.  From what the lock masters were saying is  that from now on the locks become more and more busy with boats from the many cottages along the Trent and house boats that they rent.  We have been told that the people who rent the house boats are required to have very little training on boat handling so the lock masters put them into the locks first to limit there possibility of hitting other boats.

After our arrival the temp. soared to 90 and it was quiet uncomfortable.  Our toaster had died so our only activity for the afternoon was to find a replacement.  We were both very warm by the time we returned with a new toaster in hand.  We opted to go out for dinner, and  went to a very good restaurant by the name of Brio Gusto. We even splurged for a cab ride there due to the heat. It had cooled off and on our walk back we came across a Blues Fest going on at the local Holiday Inn.

Saturday we rode our bikes to the Peterborough Lift Lock #21 we watched as several boats were lifted thru the lock and then toured the museum.  This is the tallest Lift Lock in the world and construction of the lock was completed in 1904. The lock raises and lowers boats in two water filled chambers a distance of 65 feet. I am not sure it was good to see what we are in store for on Sunday or if it would have been better to be surprised.

Maybe we schould have chosen a different route

The 10th Annual Rib fest was being held in Peterborough so we had a pulled pork sandwich for lunch.
It was quite interesting.  We chose the vendor with the most trophy's.

John is in the process of changing the internal engine zincs in the boat and there fore I am working on the blog.  All for now.  We will catch up again when we have good internet.

Love to all,
Mary and John
