This is a view from in front of our cottage in Mackinaw City. All the years of looking out at the water has helped to inspire us to
to explore more of our country's waterways.

Alexandria Bay

Saturday we decided to stay another day at Keewaydin and take the dinghy to Thousand Island Park.  This was a bit of a challenge as the engine could not get on plane with all 6 of us aboard.  Plus there was a bit of wind, waves and current against us.  We finally made it but Don had gotten quite wet in the process.

Thousand Island Park is a collection of old Victorian homes with  small “town” which consisted of lots of green space, playgrounds, a few shops, a nice old hotel, an ice cream parlor and a post office.  Everyone  traveled around the park with golf carts.  We had a nice lunch at the ice cream parlor, Guzzles.  We then played at the park on a mixture of old fashioned and new equipment.  Don had never seen a teeter totter that you could adjust the pivot point.

After a walking around and admiring all the old homes we headed back to the dinghy.  The ride back went better and quicker as the wind, waves and current were behind us.  However, this time Grandpa got a dousing when we crossed a big wake.  Kelly Don and the kids took another dip in the pool while Grandpa and Grandma got dinner ready.

Sunday after getting a pump out Grandpa, Grandma and Owen headed off to Boldt Castle while Kelly, Don & Izzt took the dinghy to town for a few groceries.  Once they met us at the Castle we all toured it and the boat house across the river.

`

Will, did you ever ecpect us to find a John Deere in the basement of a castle?

Our original plans after the Castle tour was to head down river about 10 miles, enjoy the scenery and find a spot to anchor.  Just 3 miles down river we found a nice anchoring spot and as it was late in the afternoon decide to stay there.  Once we were secure, all the kids took the dinghy and did some exploring.  The speed sensor had stopped working so John dove down to take a look at it.  He also decided to change the transom zinc now that we were in fresh water.

Monday morning everyone went swimming in the morning before we headed up river through Canadian waters.  We were not allowed to stop or anchor because Kelly and Family do not have passports.  Even though we could not stop we did enjoy the scenery.

We stopped at a New York State Park but they were full and we could not spend the night.  We tried to anchor but we could not get a hold due to all the weeds.  After 5 tries we decided to head back to where we were the night before.

Tuesday was another lazy morning with lots of swimming after breakfast.  It was then back to the Thousand Island Club.  Owen and Izzy were very excited to go back to a familiar place.  Owen was especially excited to see his new friend Cooper again.  Cooper’s mom, Dawn told us about a nice kid friendly restaurant, Foxy’s that we went to with the car.  Everyone enjoyed their meals, the kids had a special dessert which was chocolate pudding with gummy worms crawling out of it.  It was a big hit.  There were all sorts of games that the kids had fun playing after dinner.

Wednesday was another lazy morning.  Grandpa and Owen went up to the game room for some air hockey.   While Grandma made potato salad and deviled eggs for the Fourth of July cook out.

We needed to do one final provisioning before heading to Canada so Kelly, Grandpa & Grandma took the car to the grocery store while Don and the kids took the dinghy across the river.  Because of all the islands lots of business have their own docks.  Don met us at the grocery store dock and picked up Kelly.  They headed off to the town beach while we did our shopping.  After loading all our groceries in the car including a makeshift cooler with a cardboard box and a bag of ice we called for Don to come pick up the car.  We took the dinghy back to the beach while Don drove the car.  Because of the fireworks later in the evening we had told Owen he needed to take a nap today.  Grandpa & Kelly took the kids back to the boat for their naps while Don & Grandma brought the car back.  For the most part he has stopped taking naps but because there was a purpose he went down without a problem.

After naps there was more pool time.  We took the grill up by the picnic tables and had our cook out.  After everything was cleaned up we packed up dessert an headed off to find a spot to watch the fireworks.  The dessert and fireworks were awesome!  The kids were especially thrilled. After the fireworks and seeing all the boats moving back to there docks we were glad that we had decided not to take Passport out.

Thursday morning was final packing for Kelly & Family and laundry for Grandma & Grandpa.  We did get in one more dip in the pool before lunch.  After lunch we bid everyone farewell and we headed back to Clayton.  We had a great time with everyone even though we traveled just over 30 mile total the whole time they were here.  It worked out good with the little ones just enough travel time for them to have fun but not too much for them to get bored.

Good Bye

After the kids left we stopped for a pump  out and headded back to Clayton.  There was a hardware store close to the marina and we wanted to clean the carpet.  Kelly, this was planned before your visit.  We called the marina we had stayed at before and we were told to take the spot we had been in before.  We got in fine and hooked up the electric to get the AC on.

The owner of the place came down and was really giving us a hard time for being there and hooking without first checking in.  It was such a change from the last time when we were welcomed like old friends. We tried to explain that we had called just 40 minutes ago and were told that we didn’t call.
To make a long story short we moved across the channel to the municipal marina.  John then took the dinghy to the town dock and picked up the carpet cleaner.  It took him longer to pick up and return the cleaner than it did to shampoo the carpet.  The boat is not very big.

As it turns out there are 4 other Loopers here including a couple we met in Delaware City.  We exchanged cards and hope to meet up with them again along the Trent Severn Waterway in the coming days.

Tomorrow we head into Canada for the last leg of our trip.  While in Canada access to the Internet will be limited.  We will try and post when we can.  We hope to be back in Mackinaw mid August.

John & Mary
