This is a view from in front of our cottage in Mackinaw City. All the years of looking out at the water has helped to inspire us to
to explore more of our country's waterways.

Ft. Meyers & Sanibel Island, FL

On Tuesday, our second day in Ft. Meyers we took our bikes to the Edison and Ford winter estates.  It was quite impressive, especially the Edison estate.  Ford worked for one of Edison’s companies prior to inventing the automobile.  In later years he developed a long and lasting friendship with Edison.  So much so that when the house next to Edison’s came on the market he purchased it.

The Edison estate was given to the city of Ft. Meyers in 1947 by Myrna Edison and had a major renovation in 2007.   The Ford estate was purchased by the City in the  1980’s.  The presentation of both houses were done very well.

There was an Edison museum and we learned a lot about all the businesses he was involved in as well as some of the items he invented.  He applied for and received at least one patent every year for 65 years until he died.  We spent nearly six hours at the estates and museum.

After leaving the estate we rode our bikes through an old housing development right next door. Where we saw many older and well maintained homes.  After that it was off to the Grocery store on our way back to the boat.  We launched the dinghy and took a tour of the marina before dinner. There are several other Looper’s in this marina and we caught up with Erica Lynn and Salt and Sand.  It is good to see familiar faces and catch up on their travels.

Wednesday we awoke to some rain and strong winds, which meant that we needed to raise the dinghy and secure it as well as add some extra lines to the boat.  We did laundry and found a great little coffee shop which Mary said had the best cinnamon rolls she has ever had.  Our email address had been compromised and our provider had suspended service.  It took John quite a while to figure it all out, create new passwords and add them to the laptop and I Pad.  In the end everything seems to be working fine.  We were offered free internet at the marina which seemed to be more of a commercial service rather than just a typical Wifi connection we usually are offered. It was shortly after we connected that all the problems began.  Not saying that was the cause of the problem, but it sure was a coincidence.

Thanks to Christy’s suggestion last night we started to watch Dowton Abby on Masterpiece Theater.  So after dinner we settled down to watch a couple more of episodes of that before bedtime.  They are really good.

We left Legacy Harbor on Thursday morning and stopped at the City marina just ¼ mile away for fuel.  So far we have been able to buy fuel under $4.00 per gallon.  Unfortunately, that is going to change once we get to the Keys.  We had a bit of an engine problem shortly after leaving the fuel stop.  The engine alarm went off, which we had never heard.  To make a long story short it turned out that when John checked the new engine strainer he must not have tightened the top all the way and it developed an air pocket and was not getting enough water to properly cool the engine.  Once the problem was identified and corrected everything ran fine the rest of the day. Thank goodness!

We pulled into a very tight canal to get to Sanibel Marina and an even tighter slip.  This marina is in the residential area of the Island and we have a very nice home just in back of us. We got in early and housed down the boat before checking in. The staff was very friendly, gave us a map of the island and told us there would be a paper and fresh blueberry muffins in the morning.

With our map in hand we decided to take a short walk to the old lighthouse.  We found a nice ice cream shop along the way and did some shelling along the beach.  After we left the lighthouse we decided to continue to walk along the beach for a while longer.  Once we decided we had had enough of the beach we found a public walkway back to the road and took it.   We checked the map and realized we could go right and back to the boat or left, wind around a bit and go through town and then back to the boat.  We chose left, BIG mistake.  The map was deceiving and we didn’t get back to the boat until after dark at 6:30pm, we had started off at 3:00om.   We were beat.  Plus there doesn’t seem to be a town per say just business along the main drag.  We will say we were on a nice bike path the whole way.  When we got back, John put in a route on the I Pad and we had walked 9.5miles.  He said that was our daily walk for the next three days.  Mary didn't  agree and suggested maybe bikes for tomorrow.

Between the computer problems, the engine problems and the  wrong turn on our walk we are hoping that we have had our share of the Friday the 13th bad luck a bit early and we are done with that.

We will stay in Sanibel at least through Friday and see how the weather/winds look for heading further south on Saturday.  It is suppose to be a little cooler the next few days, in the mid 60’s.  Mind you we are not complaining as we did learn of the 6 inches of white stuff the Chicago area received yesterday.

Our best to all,
Mary and John
